Your PPA probably sounded simple when you first got the details.
Go there, do your work, complete your service year, collect your certificate. Easy, right?
Then Monday morning arrives, your alarm goes off at an unreasonable hour and you suddenly realise that your PPA is going to be a major part of your life for the next several months.
Welcome to NYSC.
Your Place of Primary Assignment may not be your dream workplace. It may not even be remotely connected to what you studied in school. Still, it can become one of the most valuable parts of your service year if you approach it with the right mindset.
Learn Beyond Your Job Description
One of the easiest mistakes to make is deciding that a task is not your problem simply because it is not in your job description.
Your PPA is an opportunity to observe how an organization actually works. Pay attention to how meetings are conducted, how teams communicate, how problems are solved and how decisions are made.
Ask questions when appropriate, volunteer for projects, learn how to use tools you have never encountered before.
You may discover that the skill that helps you land your first serious job after NYSC is something you picked up while trying to be useful at your PPA.
Build Relationships
Your colleagues are not simply people you happen to share an office with for a few months.
They can become mentors, friends, future colleagues, clients or valuable professional connections. Be intentional about the relationships you build without trying to turn every interaction into networking.
You should seek to be dependable, maintain a high level of respect for colleagues and stay curious about other people’s experiences.
People remember the person who was willing to help when something needed to get done.
Have a Life Outside Your PPA
Work is important, but it cannot be your entire service year.
Make time for your friends, hobbies, personal projects, learning and rest. Your PPA already provides enough opportunities for unexpected plot twists.
Most importantly, remember that the service year is temporary.
The goal is not simply to survive until you collect your certificate. It is to leave NYSC with stronger skills, useful relationships, new experiences and a better understanding of the person you want to become.
Your PPA is only one part of the year; make it count.
